Ayşe Topçuoğulları’s fourth solo exhibition, “Celebration”, explores different experiences of motherhood, the challenges, sorrows, and myths of daily life, and presents motherhood as a creative activity through the lens of the artist’s “woman-artist-mother” identity.
In her works, which typically feature children as the heroes of her imaginary world, along with the theme of nature that she consistently incorporates into her compositions, Topçuoğulları brings us into minimalist dreams. In this exhibition, however, the heroes are mothers, adorned with invisible medals.
The works in “Celebration” depict a sense of emptiness, distance, and nameless spaces that, while questioning secure attachment and safe sharing between mother and child and the themes of learning/teaching in nature, focus on the figures in a state of “spontaneity” that is always felt in her compositions. These figures take us away from the real world, focusing on a magical representation of the experience of motherhood, independent of widely accepted mainstream views on motherhood.
The exhibition, which serves as an original self-portrait of the artist’s journey through motherhood, can be visited at Galeri/Miz from April 8 to May 3, 2025.
